Our farm animals have a job to do on our Costa Rican farm!

Our farm animals all have a job on the farm on the Finca Lilo de Biolley.

The sheep eat the grass on the road and in between the coffee rows.

We have a black sheep too. She seems to be the wayward one who wanders from the group. The sheep are great at replacing machinery to keep the grasses and weeds down from the coffee plants. We are experimenting with them to see if we can substitute some of the gas we use for our weed eating machines with the sheep. We don’t use chemicals to keep our weeds down. We have organic coffee growing.

The goats eat the brush and provide milk for us.

Shirley is the queen of the rock now. She is quite the milker too! We have 4 goats soon to be 7 and we want at least 5 good milkers. Everyone loves the goat milk! Even the baby cows! It’s good for calves. Goat milk is better for a calf than it’s own cow mother can provide and the calves love it! The goats eat away at the brush around the farm to help clear it.

The cows eat the pasture and provide milk for us.

That is Ling Ling in the lead and Shi Shia behind her. Those our our 2 cows soon to be 3. Rigo has 7 or 8 cows on the property and Ricardo has 1.  Don Roberto lends us his cows when a major pasture clearance needs to take place. Don Roberto brings in about 20 cows for the occasion. They stay for about 2 weeks to do the job and then go back to don Roberto’s pasture. Don Roberto has a farm up the street. We buy most of our animals from don Roberto.

The chickens eat the insects and provide eggs for us.

That’s the rooster. “The Boy” is what I named him. There are hens around too. I just love The Boy and had to show his picture. He has a son now who is trying his hardest to crow. It’s like a strong alarm first and then a weak one after that. It’s “The Boy” sounding off firstly and then “Son of Boy” sounding off secondly.

The dogs protect the place and help with the animals.

There are 3 dogs near Ricardo’s place. We plan to have 3 more near our place. Should be fun with a pack of 6 dogs! Hunter is still a puppy but he has grown! He’s a Rottweiler and he is a good boy! He is part my dog too, so Hunter gets special attention from me when I am on the farm. He’s my baby really! I miss him when I leave! I’ll see you soon Hunter! Hunter has a great bark, and he is good around people. He defends the property very well. He warns us when people are around. He has to be chained up during the goat milking time and when the sheep are being shepherded until he really learns to be around them. Rottweilers are good herding dogs too! They are the original herding dog.  He chased the black sheep into the jungle and it took 3 days to find her. So, we are taking turns for Hunter as to when he can be out etc. He’s learning and turning into such a good dog!

The menagerie of animals (except the dogs) provide manure  for the coffee plants and soon to be veggie gardens. They are all  great company! We love our farm animals! We don’t love to eat them however. This is a vegetarian farm on the Finca Lilo de Biolley.

“Pura Vida” for all the farm animals on the Finca Lilo de Biolley!

Hi Kani, Hunter is a sweet boy! We chopped his balls off. Ricardo and I decided that Hunter’s balls needed to be chopped off so that he would not be a wanderer. He was starting to roam off the property quite a bit and was seen by neighbors past dona Betty’s house. We figured it would be best for Hunter if he became a Unic but without the Tunic (LOL). We don’t want him wandering onto other farms and go after other people’s animals etc. He is very handsome and he is a lover! As sweet as can be! He is smart too. He’s been learning to heal with me on the leash and he loves all the attention. I have hammered into Ricardo’s brain that now that Hunter is a Unic he will HAVE to be part of the family. He will no longer be a dog, so all he will have is the family and that they MUST pay attention to him! They know how much I love him. Thanks again for the comment on the site. I appreciate it!
